Common Questions
Everything you need to know about our boardwalk tours and sculpture trail walks in Lough Boora
The boardwalk at Lough Boora is completely flat with solid, level surface—no uneven ground or steps to worry about. Most of our guests aged 65+ find the pace comfortable and manageable, with plenty of spots to stop and rest whenever you'd like. We typically walk about 1.5 to 2 km over 1.5 hours, so there's no rush.
Wear layers—Offaly weather can change quickly. Waterproof jacket and sturdy walking shoes or boots (even in summer, the ground near the water can be damp). Bring a small bag with water, snacks, and binoculars if you have them for bird spotting. Sun protection and a hat are essential on clear days.
Spring and autumn are peak times for migrating birds. Barn owls are most active at dawn and dusk, especially September through March. Summer is great for seeing dragonflies and damselflies around the wetland. We can arrange early morning or evening tours if you're serious about owl watching—just let us know when booking.
Dogs aren't permitted on the main boardwalk as they disturb nesting birds and other wildlife. However, there are other walking areas in the parklands where dogs on leads are welcome. We're happy to suggest alternative routes or discuss options when you book.
We recommend booking at least 3 days ahead so we can match you with the right group size and arrange transport if needed. Last-minute bookings sometimes work if we have availability, but it's not guaranteed. Booking also lets us know about any mobility needs or specific interests like sculpture art or owl behaviour.
Prices vary depending on group size and tour length, but typically range from €25–€45 per person for a 1.5-hour guided walk. This includes expert guidance, use of binoculars, and detailed information sheets about the habitat and sculptures. Group discounts apply for parties of 8 or more. Get in touch for a custom quote.
